Fuji Xerox's IH Fusing Technology ReceivesMinister of the Environment's FY2011 Commendation for Global Warming Prevention Activity

A Fuser With the World's Fastest Three- Second Start Up Time

TOKYO, December 14, 2011 — In recognition of the development of the induction heating (IH) technology that delivers convenience and energy conservation at the same time, Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. received the Minister of the Environment's Commendation for the Global Warming Prevention Activity (in the Technological Development and Product Development category) organized by Japan's Ministry of Environment.

The IH fusing technology has adopted an IH belt containing the world's thinnest nonmagnetic metal with a thickness of microns (one micron=0.001 millimeters) in a fuser that fixes toner on paper, as well as temperature-sensitive magnetic alloy to avoid excessive rise of the IH belt's temperature while increasing heating efficiency. Thereby the fuser does not have to be preheated, achieving the world's fastestNote1 three-second start up time and zero power consumption when not printing.

Conventionally, a fuser had to remain preheated for copiers and digital multifunction devices to be operated immediately from the standby mode, which made it difficult to achieve users' convenience and energy saving at the same time. However, Fuji Xerox pursued this challenge, believing that finding a solution to such a conflict would result in true energy-saving technology.

In terms of the scale of energy saving, CO2 emissions are anticipated to be reduced by approximately 384,000 tonsNote2 if around 500,000 existing devices in use with a longer transition time to the sleep modeNote3 were replaced with devices incorporating the IH fusing technology and used for five years. The award also recognized the effectiveness of this technology to realize Fuji Xerox's target to cut the per-device power consumption by 80 percent by FY2020 from the FY2005 level.

The IH fusing technology is featured in eight new modelsNote4 of full-color digital multifunction devices, the ApeosPort-IV C and DocuCentre-IV C series, to be released on December 19.

Fuji Xerox aims at continuously providing RealGreen--true pleasant eco technologies and services that carry both user convenience and high eco performance. The company continues to contribute in global warming prevention by developing energy-saving products and delivering them to more customers.

The Minister of the Environment's Commendation for the Global Warming Prevention Activity, which started in FY1998, is part of measures to promote anti-global warming activities. It is announced in the Global Warming Prevention Month of December each year to commend individuals and organizations for their outstanding achievements concerning the prevention of global warming.

Note 1
Applies for ApeosPort-IV C3370 / C2270, DocuCentre-IV C3370 / C2270, compared to multifunction devices in the market as of July 2009
Note 2
In the case of replacing with ApeosPort-IV C3370 / C2270 and DocuCentre-IV C3370 / C2270 and setting them with the sleep mode
The Typical Electricity Consumption (TEC) value difference from the previous models { (7.68-1.15) (kWh /week)} × {(52 weeks/year) × 0.444 (kg-CO2/kWh) }× 510,000 units × 5 years of use =384,450,000 kg-CO2≒384 million kg-CO2 (Calculated based on the products as of July 2009)
Note 3
Not to wait for the devices to reboot, users generally set their devices not to shift to the sleep mode, resulting in unnecessary power consumption
Note 4
ApeosPort-IV C5575 / C4475 / C3375 / C2275, DocuCentre-IV C5575 / C4475 / C3375 / C2275
