Denshi-Pen, Solution to Digitize Hand-Written Information

Streamlines On-Site Work With No Computer Access

TOKYO, December 6, 2011 — On December 9, Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. will release Denshi-Pen, a hand-written information input system, which easily and swiftly converts handwriting on paper into digital data, and Denshi-Pen Form Solution 1.0 J, software to customize users' existing forms into a format for use with Denshi-Pen.

Denshi-Pen is a user interface that consists of a pen and paper, common tools anyone can use. The system improves the work process of digitizing hand-written information without changing the way of writing on a piece of paper, which is required in certain work. By connecting Denshi-Pen with a PC, users can digitize information hand-written on the special paper with embedded digital codes, which can be printed out from Fuji Xerox's multifunction devices. Further, it is an affordable system without additional system development expenses.

At offices with an IT environment, workers generally input data into operation systems directly from their computers. Also, with the development of network environments and proliferation of mobile terminals, more users input data directly into the systems from remote locations. However, there are still situations on site where users cannot bring in their PCs and need to fill out paper forms with a pen. In these cases, they need to go back to the office to re-enter their handwriting into a PC, which is a time-consuming and inefficient process.

Improves the efficiency of on-site work including maintenance/inspections and production process management

Denshi-Pen and Denshi-Pen Form Solution 1.0 enable users to swiftly digitize handwriting using existing forms without changing its format and operations at their on-site work such as maintenance/inspections and production process management where no computer access is available. The system can be applied to a wide range of operations, such as maintenance and inspection of manufacturing facilities, after-sale services for products, vehicle maintenance in the transportation industry, and building facility maintenance. With this system, users do not need to enter data into a PC, thus contributing to enhanced work efficiency.

Realizes high character recognition ratio

Denshi-Pen identifies forms and the stroke order of hand-written text to achieve a high level* of character recognition. Compared to the low hand-written character recognition level of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system, this system offers smooth character recognition that satisfies business use. Additionally, users can preset specific information that would be input in a form, such as names and addresses, to each data field to further improve the character recognition rate.

Note:
The general character recognition rate for handwriting is 40-50 percent with the OCR system, and 80-90 percent with Denshi-Pen or similar systems that also recognizes stroke orders (Fuji Xerox estimate).
