EMC Testing Facility of Niigata Fuji Xerox ManufacturingObtains Certification as International Testing LaboratoryFrom Belgian Government

Aiming to Ensure Quality Assurance for Evaluation Data by Establishing a Group-Wide Evaluation System

TOKYO, May 18, 2009 — Completing a technical audit by the Belgium Accreditation Body (BELAC) operated by the Belgian Ministry of Economic Affairs, the EMCNote 1 testing facility of Niigata Fuji Xerox Manufacturing Co., Ltd., an affiliate of Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. obtained in March this year the BELAC NBN EN ISO/IEC17025 certification in the field of EMINote 2 in EMC testing.

The Niigata EMC testing facility conducts tests on the effects of electromagnetic waves on electrical and electronic appliances, focusing on proprietary products. It also provides evaluation services for products manufactured by other companies. As a result of the certification, products that have obtained EMI evaluation at the Niigata facility will receive relief benefits under a Mutual Recognition Agreement that the government of Belgium has signed with foreign countries. For example, when products are shipped overseas, they will be exempted from undergoing local examinations prior to the actual shipment, which requires sending the product beforehand, in the case the ship-to country calls for permits and local testing. The certification also enables the Niigata EMC testing facility to provide high-quality EMI inspection data to countries and regions that accept self-declaration such as the United States and Europe, as a facility with certified third-party neutrality and accuracy of data.

Fuji Xerox has been working to establish fairness, speed and accuracy regarding assessment of safety areas (electrical and mechanical safety; laser safety; chemical emissions; EMC; acoustic noise; radio frequencies) required for electrical and electronic appliances, including color digital multifunction devices and printers. Niigata Fuji Xerox Manufacturing has taken on the challenge of applying for BELAC certification for its EMC testing facility under Fuji Xerox’s management policy to operate this evaluation system throughout the company and its affiliates to assure uniformity and quality in its evaluation data on proprietary products. The successful obtainment of the certification allows Fuji Xerox and its affiliates to take a major step forward in establishing a group-wide, high-integrity evaluation system.

Given the rapid advance and spread of electric and electronic appliances as well as communication terminal equipment, manufacturers are being urged to carefully consider the electromagnetic environment, with the aim of preventing adverse interactions between individual electromagnetic waves and potential damage to equipment operation or human health.

Besides the Niigata facility, the FXICC Test Laboratory (Fuji Xerox International Certification Center) located at the Ebina Center of Fuji Xerox has already acquired BELAC certificationNote 3 for product-safety evaluation of EMC, acoustic noise, radio frequencies, electrical and mechanical safety, laser safety and chemical emissionsNote 4. The FXICC Test Laboratory is the only domestic facility that has attained the BELAC NBN EN ISO/IEC17025 certification for having the ability to handle all safety-related evaluation tests for information equipments at one location.

As a manufacturer that supplies products to markets around the world, Fuji Xerox will continue to enhance its facilities that comply with forthcoming European and international standards, and at the same time, further strive for the development, maintenance and improvement of a Group-wide, high-quality evaluation system.

Note 1
EMC:Electromagnetic Compatibility (Refers to the ability to function without introducing electromagnetic disturbance to other devices, as well as a certain level of immunity to electromagnetic interference.)
Note 2
EMI:Electromagnetic Interference (Refers to unwanted noise, i.e. electromagnetic waves, resulting from electromagnetic radiated emissions from equipment. There are two types of EMI: radiation or conduction.)
Note 3
The FXICC Test Laboratory obtained certification in the EMC area in 2002, certification in acoustic noise and radio frequencies in June 2005, and certification in three areas of electrical and mechanical safety, laser safety and chemical emissions in February 2007.
Note 4
Chemical emissions (Refers to chemical substances emitted from equipment, such as VOC <Volatile Organic Compounds>, ozone and dust particles.)
