Fuji Xerox Starts Operation of a New Production Line toManufacture Various Photoreceptors Based on InnovativeProduction Technologies

Strengthens Domestic Production Infrastructure and Meets Needs for High-Quality Color Images

TOKYO, September 9, 2008 — Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. has set up a photoreceptor production line at the Takematsu Center with investment of around 4.0 billion yen in order to strengthen its domestic production infrastructure and meet increasing needs for high-quality color images. A ceremony to celebrate commencement and completion of the new line was held today. With the operation of the line, production capacity at the Takematsu Center will increase by 1.5 times to annual 13.5 million units of photoreceptors, which will be mainly supplied to products for the printing market and multifunction devices for the office market.

The line was designed to enable flexible production of different sized (diameter) photoreceptors and high-image-quality color photoreceptors, while also being able to flexibly adapt to changes in production amount. The introduction of the latest production technologies, including high-quality cleaning technology and highly integrated precision coating technology, will help to double productivity.

The photoreceptor production process includes cleaning and drying a cylinder made of aluminium, creating photosensitive film by submerging it several times in photo-sensitized solution, and finally, implanting components at both ends of the cylinder.

Fuji Xerox has introduced a new high-quality cleaning technology that facilitates optimum precision in the cleaning process, which is halved in comparison to conventional methods. Meanwhile, a new highly integrated precision coating technology has also been introduced for the coating process to make a photosensitive film, which enhances both productivity and quality of the film.

The new production system has approximately doubled productivity relative to traditional systems, halved the amount of carbon dioxide emitted per unit produced, and reduced the amount of water required in cleaning by 70 percent.

While Fuji Xerox is shifting its assembly and production lines to China as part of its production strategy, the highly sophisticated, flexible production of large, high-speed publishing systems and other equipment is being handled in Japan. Likewise, the company continues to domestically produce toner and key components such as photoreceptors that need special manufacturing equipment with advanced technologies, also to quickly respond to customers’ daily demand.
